What Will Happen in 2006?

The “Weekly Rant” column was featured in the PC Mechanic Newsletter since 2005. Topics relate to some aspect of technology, which include opinions on hardware, software, new technology, technology companies, and computing standards.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen hardware, software and companies come and go. Some people have been right on the money about what will happen. Others have been way off. And there have also been a number of surprises along the way.

What I’m going to do here for this week’s rant is take a stab at what may or may not happen by the time the clocks change to 2007.

  1. The CAN-SPAM Act will have little effect on the growing problem of spam, even with New York Attorney General Elliot Spitzer spearheading the “movement”
  2. The recording industry will lose a lawsuit, thus prompting a review of their lawsuit practices.
  3. CPU speeds will officially hit 4 GHz.
  4. A “finalized”, “working” version of ATi CrossFire will hit store shelves.
  5. Windows Vista will face a delay that pushes back the release date.
  6. Yahoo, in a surprise move, will come out with a new feature, beating Google to the punch.
  7. eBay will add a Skype option to its auctions as another means to contact sellers (other than by email).
  8. Podcasts will increase in popularity, and you’ll start to find advertisements in them (as you would on the radio) in the latter half of 2006.
  9. Torrents will begin to gain popularity in terms of using them as an alternative to server mirrors for file downloads.
  10. DVD burners will become as common-place in prebuilt machines as CD-RW’s are currently.

We’ll see by next year how many of these will hold true. I’m guessing only 4 of these predictions will be fulfilled. But until then, try not to get too tipsy on the punch at your New Years celebration!
